Have you ever wondered how sticker makers are foiling their stickers? In this post, I will teach you everything I know about how to foil stickers.
Foiled stickers are so so pretty and I totally get why you want to make your own too.
However, getting started with foiling your own stickers might be quite an investment for you – depending on your current situation.
You need three things in order to be able to foil your stickers.
- Heat activated foil in your preferred colors.
- A laser printer // laser printed stickers
- A laminator that uses heat to laminate (or similar, like the Minc).
Let me break it down for you. This process is quite extensive. Easy to do, but you need all the information to do it.
Firstly, the foil needs to be activated with heat for it to stick to your stickers. So before you buy just any foil, think again, and look for foil that is activated with heat, like the Minc and deco foil.
Now that you have your heat activated foil, you need the medium that your foil will stick to – this is where the laser printer is essential. When the toner (the ink inside a laser printer) is heated up ( in the laminator) it will act as the glue and adhere the foil onto the paper – only where your printer has printed the toner.
This also means that it will not stick to your inkjet prints. So in order to foil on top of colors you need to first print your stickers on your inkjet printer and then run it through your laser and print what you want foiled in black. Does that make sense?
Broken down into steps – you need to:
1 Print your colorful stickers on your inkjet printer. You need your colors to be in inkjet ink, because if you print your whole sticker sheet on your laser printer, the foil will not “know” where to stick to.
2 Then add the black, and only the black and print that on your laser printer. So what I mean here is that you add where you want foil in your design program and then print your stickers one more time. This time on your laser printer. i have heard that a monochrome laser printer gives the best quality.
3 Then you add foil and put it into your heated laminator. This is where the magic happens. You need to heat your laminator and slide the stickers through that with the foil on top of the stickers. You place the foil with the shiny side up and protect your stickers and foil from your laminator with a cover. this cover can just be a piece of paper.
4 Remove the foil and see your beautiful stickers. Look at your new shiny beautiful foiled stickers, and let them cool down for a few seconds.
5 Now you cut your stickers on your cutting machine. Then you simply do what you normally do, when you need to cut your stickers and then plan with your beautiful foiled stickers.
That is basically it. It is not difficult at all, but you just need to do all the steps in the right order. Look at the picture below to get a better idea of the process, if you are visual like me.
