The name of your new business is probably one of the most important tasks that you are facing in the beginning as a new business owner. That is why I made this post about how to name your Etsy shop.
You want to have a name that is catchy, easy to remember and also in some way relates to you – it is your baby in the beginning. Nothing is more satisfying than getting your name for the business down. Then you can begin designing your logo and branding, which just makes the whole adventure much more realistic and in the near future. So let’s get going, huh?
In the next steps, I have gone over how I come up with the names of my businesses (yup! I have more than one). I hope that this will help you in the direction you want and get some ideas going!
PSSST… I made a 2-page workbook that you can download and print at home, to make this process much easier. Download it right here – It is free 🙂

Step 1: What are you going to sell, what is your business about?
The first thing that I do is to write down what I am going to sell. Not just in that one word, like stickers, but I try to come up with words that are related to what I am selling as well, like the ones I have listed below.
Now, if you are a sticker maker – chances are that you are, here on this blog, this little session might help you in the right direction for your name as well.
Once you have a bunch of words directly linked to what you are going to be selling, you can move onto the next step. Spend a little time at each step and empty your brain before moving on. You might already have some favorite words. Start with those in the next step.
Step 2: Find synonyms for the words you just wrote down.
Now it is time to come up with words that relate to the words you just wrote down. Start by doing this in your head, to get words that are familiar to you and that you would use in your day-to.day. And then after emptying your head for words and having them written down in front of you, you will make friends with the thesaurus, that will hopefully spark some new words and ideas, based on the words you already have.
What you do is simply to type in the words you just wrote, some might be better than others, and see if there are other similar words that you can write down along with the ones you have…
You want to get a little deeper into your own thought process. This is where your great ideas will sprout 🙂
Step 3 – is more words, but this time words that relate to you
Now that you have a bunch of words written down, think of what other words can relate to you and your business.
Use words that you would use if you were to explain to a new person who you are. This can be traits of your personality or it could be something as simple as: girl.
Now you could take those words to thesaurus again, or you might already have some great combos that make sense to you. However, when you have the last set of words it is time to mix and match them and name your new business – the fun part!
Step 4 – Combine your words, mix and match
This step is where you actually get to write down potential business names, so take your time with this one – it is the fun one. It might come to you right away, and you might have to ponder and think about it for some time, while you do everything else connected to your business.
Try to combine your words in different ways. Maybe you have some that are favorites. Try to play around with the words, maybe even make up your own, by combining two.
Step 5 – check your name on Etsy, google and more.
Once you have the one you love, you need to do the terrifying part, which is to check whether or not the name is available on Etsy.. So type it into Etsy and see if you can get your name down, or if you have to modify it a little. You need to check the name under the creation of the shop. you can check the name where it reads – check availability
If you are in luck, then go and lock that name down. There is a reason why you picked it, so go and make it yours. If you, on the other hand, find that the name is already taken, you can think about if there are any modifications to the name, that you could go with and try the search once again.
Another thing that could be highly relevant is to search for your name in google and see what else comes up. Also, if you are planning on having separate social accounts for your business, you should check the availability on the platforms you want to use.
Now go and get the name everywhere you need it!
And there you have it – your new business name. Now you can get going on making your branding and logo. You are one huge step closer to opening that Etsy shop! You go, girl!!
I would love to hear the name you came up with in the comments below – so please share it with me!
